leaning into silence
Hi there, Reader! For the past five days, I was on the road, teaching sound healing workshops and facilitating both group and indvidual sound healing sessions. Reflecting over these five days, I keep coming back to the necessity of allowing ourselves Time to Rejunvenate in Silence. Each day, I was holding space for others to be vulnerable as they touched and played various sound healing instruments for the first time; as they began or continued along their self healing journey. Each day was incredibly rewarding as the teacher, the guide, the mentor, the holder-of-space. My intent each day was to allow each individual to be themselves, to ask questions, to reflect, to make connections within and without. During both workshops and sessions for sound healing, I always talk about the importance of silence in a sound healing session. In the words of Tao Te Ching:
The usefulness of what is depends on what is not.
11th Verse:
Thirty spokes converge upon a single hub;
it is on the hole in the center that the use of the cart hinges.
Shape clay into a vessel;
it is the space within that makes it useful.
Carve fine doors and windows,
but the room is useful in its emptiness.
~ Living the Wisdom of the Tao: The Complete Tao Te Ching and Affirmations, by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer
👉 The usefulness of a sound healing session comes from the silence, not from the sound. Silence is a must in sound healing sessions. Without silence there is no sound. It is during the silence that the sound vibrations integrate into our bioenergetic fields. It is during the silence that we tap into our higher selves. It is during silence that we replenish our mind, body and spirit. In a sound healing session, continual movement from one instrument to another without break becomes a cacophony of sound that shakes up energy, while not allowing for rest, replenishing, rejuventation, and potentially leaving you and your clients in state of unease. As I was sitting on my porch this morning with my morning cup of joe, I was basking in the silence. My body was tired from traveling and carrying 75+ heavy instruments in and out of buildings from my van. My mind was tired from the intense concentration it takes to teach with integrity and clarity. My spirit was tired from staying open to receive messages and hold space for each person. I deeply experienced the need to slow down, sit in silence and rejuventate. These moments are needed in our daily lives. We need to create space in the transition from work to home. Just as we hold space for others, we also need to hold space for ourselves. Our physical and subtle bodies crave these moments between sounds in order to heal and rejuvenate. This morning, even though I felt pressure to start on my business, I also knew my energy needed some time to rest and recover from the past five days being on the road. By leaning into the silence, now my concentration is higher and my body feels more rested. I feel ready to start again. How about you?
